ANTI-BETTING LEGISLATION.

The Hawthorne Enquiry Board has conducted its sitting, and comments very strongly on the disorganization of the Railway Department. The Pilot Board has suspended the certificate of Pilot (iafford for two years m consequence of his bringing m the George Roper and causing the wreck of that vessel. Godied and B alien, solicitors, have I commenced proceedings against the New Australasion Company, on behalf of Mrs O'Shea, widow of one of the victims of the Creswick disaster, for £1000. A well-attendeed public meeting, convened by the Mayor m obedience to a requisition, took place on Monday night m support of the annexation of the Pacific Islands. Mr Justice Higinbotham, m an able speeech, advocated annexation m order to precent the islands being peopled by French criminals, and to psoperly regulate the labour traffic. At the criminal session, Thomas, charged with embezzling £1600 from J. and A. Brown, his employers, was sentenced to three years' hard labour. Sydney, July 18. The Engineers* Exhibition, which has been remarkably successful, was brought to a close on Saturday. A profit of £1000 has been realised. Mr Robert Jervois, said to be a brother of the Governor of New Zealand, broke his leg on going ashore from the steamer at Newcastle, and waß taken to the hospital. Mr Charles Packer, R.A.M., the well-known musician, died on Friday, aged 73. His funeral was attended by 6,000 persons, and a choral service was held. • The annual sales of stud sheep are dow proceeding. Some rams fetched up to 325 guineas. Adelaide, July 18. During the voyage of the Sorata from Melbourne a heavy sea broke on board }J washir g overboard M cCdllum, the boatew<*iu\j mate, breaking both legs of Woodman, the carpenter, and breaking •he leg and arm uf Davis, a seaman. Woodman and Davis were taken to the Hospital, and Woodman had both legs amputated at tho knee ; Davis . had one foot taken off. No sign of MoCallum could be found, al chough the ship put back. In the Assembly the second reading of the Bill to repeal the use oi the totalisator has taken place, and a motion U beiurethe iJoase to render betting of any kind illegal, also the publishing of odds by newspapers.
