LOCAL AND . GENERAL.
The Catalonia is to leave Wellington for London early m August. We learn it is not improbable Mr Carreen will be requested to act as bandmaster of the V.lunteer Band, as Mr Newcombe finds it difficult to devote the necessary time and attention, chiefly owing to his residing some <iii»fnnee m th" cnurury. Mr Ourreßn is a very competent musician, and is a great acquisition to the Volunteer Band. A correspondent suggests that unless the Stoney Creek road is better looked after by the Cannty Conncil before winter is over much of it will be impassable. It is expected the slip on the Stoney Creek load will all have been removed by Christ* mas, at the rapid rate at whioh the work is • being profleouted, '
I We hear that the heavy traffic through the Gorge is very apparent m the heavy state of the road. In places the ruts are deep and dangerous. A nasty accident happened yesterday to a daughter of Mr Lowes, of the Oiaagaki Hotel, Ashurat. She was alLhting from a conveyance, iv Main-street, when she missed her footing and fell, sustaining somewhat severe abrasions. Prompt attention was paid to her, and Mrs Lowes was hastely summoned trom Aahurst, who came m duriag the evening. We hope to hear that the little girl has recovered the effects of her accident, A number of cattle passed through the Gorge to-day, en-routa for Mr Lowes' station near Mastertou. Mr D. Campion was m charge of the drove which included some very good stook. Host Murphy.of the Woodvil'e Club Hotel, is to celebrate the opening of the now portion of his really splendid house by a dinner and social gatheriug this evening, for vririoh a great nnmber of iuvitations have been issued, and which it is expected will be numerously attended, several residents of Palmerston having signified their intention of being pre» sent. We learn that it is probable that R. MoNei', Esq., will preside. A very pleasant affair is looked forward to. Rumour is already busy with the names of candidates for the representation of the Manawatu Electoral Disbricts. Among them are mentioned, Messrs D. H, Macarthur, A. P. Douglas, R. Seddon, and Sir W. The Glee Club m process of formation at Terrace End will not appear m public, but is being formed chiefly for the private enter-tai-iineut of its members and their friends. . I Telephone communication with Ashurst is found a very great convenience, and is frequently made use of by residents of Palmerston. and also of Woodville. Major Kemp is seriously ill up the Wanganui River. Mr Beck is now turning out at his factory m Fitzberbert-street a very superior article m the way of ginger ale, which is considered by judges to be first-class, for body, flavour, aud eff-rvescing qualities. It sho^d have an extensive sale as i- becomes better known. It is under-tood that Messrs Meyrick and Perriu »reihe successful tendererers for Mr Rae's new buildinp, shortly to be commenced under Mr Lucomb's supervision. • - A Supplementary Gazette, issued on Saturday, contains the arrangements for electing the new Manawaiu County Council on theiih August, 1883. One of the emus m the Wellington Botanical Gardens has been killed by do^rs. There is only one way (says the Wdrarapa Starj of reforming the Upper House,— abolish payment of members, and ten chances to one the House and its pension list will disappear m compauy. . A Scotch paper claims the champion mean man, saying he insisted upon being admitted to a panorama at half-price, because he has but one eye. • Truth ' heard the other day a curious instance of the difficulty of very young children to realise the sense of words. A lady taught her child to say amen after grace. For a day or two all went well ; but the child's mind had been workin&,And she surprised her mother by solemnly saying amen, a- women. We ■< onder how many children uuder five could give a reasonable explanation of the word amen. It is boldly declared by the London evening papers, of Mav 27, that ODonovan ßossa, the dynamite projector, now m New York, and Peter J. Tynan, the 'Number One ' of the Phoenix Lark murderers, are undoubtedly Btitish spies under regular pay. These decla« rations were backed up by certain noted statements, and have produced a genuine sensation among the Irißh. Nearly all members of the Irish Parliamentary Party have ridiculed the statement. Many women are spoken of as angels, and Mrs. Noah must have been an ark-angel. An old bachelor recently gave the following, toast: — 'Woman: the morning star of infancy; the day star of manhood, the evening star of age. Bless our stars, and may hey always be kept at a telescopsc dis tance.' ' No,' gasped the victim, I ♦ I know it won't, but it does just now, and that's what interests me,' No more popular delusion exists than that m regard to Her Majesty's surname. The majority of our countrymen Lelieve it to be Guelph, the rest are oontent with that knowledge. Tliere are, however, a few who know that m marrying Prinoe Albert of Coburg Gotha, the Sovereign took the surname of her husband, Wettin. which has for upwards of 450 years been the family cognomen of the House of Saxony, It is hinted says the San Francisco Bulletin that all the bother about Queen Victoria's falling down stairs was but a clever dodge, preliminary to a grand tour through the United States I The swagsman, Ferguson, who was arrested at Halcombe on a charge of indecently assaulting a married woman, was brought before Mr Ward, R.M.,at Feilding on Thursday.
