A Popular Sportsman.
The sudden death of Prince Batthy - any was recently reported by axblt*. Cue Pnll Mali Gazette gives the following particulars : — '* Great consternation was cnueed at Newmarket on 25Ui Ap il by the yudden d-nth of Prince. Batthyany. The Prince was joins' down thf st ps which lead to the <uneheon»roona m the Jockey Oinb s r and, when he sli:-pe J , and fnli down head foremost. He was picked np, bleeding, by Lord Cudogan and one or iwo other gentlemen who weres:anding noar, rud a doctor was at once summoned. Life, however, was found to be extinct. Th^re is some uncertainty —which a coroner^ inquest will doubtv less clear up— whether death was due to the shock of ihe fall, or whether the Prince was seiz°d with a fit when he fell, 'L'he sad event happened when the horses for the Two Thousand were being saddled ; so it was impossible to adjourn the racing, as the stewards would wish to have done. Prince Batthyany was the owner and nominator of Ful men, one of the favourites for this year's Derby, for which he is consequently disqualified. He is also disqualified for the Epsom Grand Prize, the Ascot Gjld Gup, and the St. Jamed' Palace Stakes at Ascot."
