It does not appear that the fire insurance combination has yet abandoned all hope of compelling the public to sub - mib to its extortionate demands. It was thought that through one or two companies having announoed their secessior. from the " unholy alliance," the monop" oly would be broken np. But there is joj_o hidden mystery behind their subsequent action which it is difficult to comprehend. One day they announce that they no longer belong to the " association," as it was called ; but a few days afterwards the advertisement was suddenly withdrawn. What does ib all mean ? The remedy lies with the m surers. All they have to do, is, t ( guarantee their business to an incependent foreign company, say ia Australia or England, and the chaace will be eagerly jumped at. The rates now be ing charged are simply outrageous. Nc wonder the companies can declare big dividends, and erect palatial offices 1 A bieach of faith was committed when deputations from Halcombe and Feilding were informed that m future the south of the Rangitikei liver was to be placed on a similar footing, as regards tariff, with the districts to the north. [We May say that the reason for this senseless and aibitrary line of demarcation is difficult to euggest, but it appearto us groundless and unwarrantable.] Next thing they are informed is that the former understanding is virtually r-T'ndiatH-.'. If th « styb o 'oiaj- bu* ; nets is S'llrnitteU to, those who art victimised but who utter no profit or
remotistiance, deserve to have stui heavier burdens imposed, which un* doubtedly will, bd done. Tho monopoly should be resihted vi et armis, so to s^eak, and the <; association " made to understand that any attempts to enforce an exorbitant tariff will induce a strong determination to o; pose combination by combinati n, when the "unholy alii ance" must inevitably go to the wall.
