LA.ST NIGHT'S MEETING.
Present—The Mayor, Crs Ferguson, Walker, McNeil, Mowlam, and Bnelson. Apologies read from Ors Linton and Leary for their unavoidable absence from the Council meeting. COBBEBPONDENCE, From the Palmerston Volunteers, thanking the Council for the use of the Town Hall for drill purposes, and sta'ing that the Volunteers w«re now m occ ipacion of their own drill sh*d. Wylds, calling attention to the condition of East-street, ann | .taking to have a short distance of it formed, to giro him an approach to his residence, Referred to Public Works Committee. From the Resident Engineer, m reply to letter m reference to proposal •ai way wnrks m the Square, statingthat no fmther instructions m regard to the matter had been received, but sug-g<-Btin<» Ithat the tiees ami shrubs m the Square might as well be moved while the season was suitable. The Mayor stated that the Engineer had been already requepted to ask the Government to' remove the trees and shrubs m readiness for the proposed. work. From the Secretary of Board of Wellington College Governors, giving the history of the endowment, which that body had baen asked to transfer, and stating that the Board had not the power to. divest themselves of the reserves m question, and that a Bill was to be introduced to formally vest the reserves m the Board of Governors.. The Mayor su^ested the Council signing a memorial to the* Government; asking for: a suitable hospital endow* ment to be granted for the use of the Borough. The suggestion was agreed to. From the Bank of New Zealand, suggesting to have coupons made payable m Auckland, for certain reasons specified. Agreed to. From— Evans, complaining that there was no outlet m Cook-street for water coming down College^street, and asking j to have certain necessary improvements carried out. • • Cr Ferguson supported the request;, which could be given effect, to at a small cost—that ia to v say it all- 'the 'money* available for drainage were nut alexpended. Resolved, that the matter be attended to forthwith. Cr McNeil applied for a transfer of lease from Mr tf ampson to himself, if such was not informal. Relerred to Betfeives Committee to deal- with. The question of tree-planting m Reserves was also left m hands of same committee. Kesoived that a general rate of Is m tha£ and a Library rate of Id m the£ be made for the current year. Resolved that copies of the statistics for 1877 and 1879 be procured to make the series complete* The Mayor stited that Or Lemon hae been supplied with all needful information m connection with the electric lighting of the Borough, and that he was now m communication with England as to co«t, &c. The Council than adjourned.
