Epping Forest Tragedy.
THE EXWOU.i'JXM OP THE V MURDERERS.
The two youths, Sutherland . and Ogden, whose vicious and fatal exploits as bushrangers were recently reported ia the standard, were executed at Hobart on Monday, Juue 4. The Rev. Mr Mace was with Sutherland from an early hour, and the. Key. Mr Sboobridge with Ogden. Neither slept during "the night, saying they wished to see as much as possible of this world before leaving ir. Both the doomed men softened during the night. Sutherland requested Mr Mace to ask the wives of the murdered mea for their forgiveness. He complained bitterly of the treatment he had received from the world, which, he said had not been a pleasant place to him. He had no parents to look after him, but was. kicked about byemployers who did not care for him". The criminals seemed to realise their position before leaving their cells. They stated thty had nothing to say. There was little change to b 3 noticed m the ippaarance of Sutherland, Odgen's features were heavy and swollen. Preceded' by Mr Shoobridge, reading the burial service, both men walked calmly to the scaffold. Sutherland's step was firm. Ogden, who carried a bunch of flowers, trembled violently. He looked very boyish standing on the scaffold. Whea xhe hangman placed the noose on Sutherland's neck he never flinched. Oeden also kept firm. Not a muscle of either man's fa^e moved when the cap wa? drawn over it. Death was instantaneous. Ogden's mother states that the road* iag of the exploits of the Kelly gaaaincited the lads to commit man. Sutherland's statement abmfc his lack of training, and the treatment accorded him by a world he was appirently unfitted for, will, although probably exaggerated, afford to the thoughtful a sad commentary upon our boasted, so-called civilisation.
