Manawatu Standard. PUBLISHED DAILY. Suivant La Verite. FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1883. OFFICIAL LEAKAGE.

Sydney correspondent of the Australasian makes some serious charges against .the Telegraph Department m New South Wales. He writes :— .The unexpected jictory of Sting m the Adelaide Cup haa been the means of {riving rise to a great scandal here, and will probably lead to a thorough and much-nee ied reorganisation of onr Electric Telegraph Department. The first telegram that reached Sydney announcing the result was addressed to tattersali's Club, having been despatched direct irom the racecourse by a .member o^ the Club then there; but before it reached its destination m Pittstreet, a couple of smart gentlemen, who had become possessed 'of the information availed . themselves of the opportunity to take some of the bookmakers down. 1 hose who suffered most were Chailey ißahtterman, who has now joined the ring, £60 ; and B. E.Jones, j>so j and it is alleged that the information was surreptitiously conveyed from the telegraph operating rooms to persons outside. He mentions other instances m which contents of important eporting telegrams have been disolosed. When Zulu won the Melbourne Cap m ; 18,30,; one of the messenger hoys availed himself of the information gained m the office to win £25 from a member of Tattbrsali's, and was covetouß enough to desire to make more : and when the champion sculling ,maich between Hanlon and Trick ett was rowed m England, the late Mr James Punch, although not receiving a. single word by cable, was the first possessor m Sydney of the. result, and had it posted m his bar before the newspaper offices received their messages. ' Th«i matter is to be brought officially under the notice of tne Jfoßtmaster-General by the Chairman of Tattersall's Club.
