One of the utmost appalling catastrophies that have taken place tor; many years past occurred at Sanderland Jast night. •• ■ ■ ; ; . ' A children's fete was held daring- the eveDi'ng m the Victoria Hallj folly two thousand being present and the entertainment having ended, the children were ' leaving the building, when a false alarm, 1 of fire was raised, a panic ensued and a rush was mad for tha staircase, m descending which many fell, and were trampled upon; and before the panic could be allayed and the staircase cleared one hundred and eighty hart been crushed to death and many others were seriously injurei. . The calamity has caused a profound distress and gloom over the district and sympathy i? universally expressed for I the sufferers and th^ir relations.
