NORTH-STREET.
(Dedicated to the members of the Borough Council.) Through mud ankle-deep m Slimy North -street, To my home ad 1 plodded away, Those Councillors neat I wished had a seat. Composed of the mud and tho clay. ! Hure the t parent's a fool, to send youngsters to school, Through the water and mad to go crying ; To spend half the day, betwixt study and play, While the socks on their leet they are drying. Could they track m the street the print of the feet, \A hich the little ones zigzag steer, Their very, hearts' blood must be cold as the tiiud, ix they'd weep till they hadn't a tear. The butcher and baker will seldom now cater, Your Btreefc aay they " is so dirtyj" Perchance should they come, their lingo is rum. And theladies get awfully " shirty." A petition was signed, and m language rpfined, The state of the street was made known; The notice they .'ook, our co&fidence shook, And hope tor the present has flown. The answer they gave, their credit to save, (By jingo it stung like a nettle), Was calmly to say, m a financial way, "We would, but we havn't the metal." : Now Councillors wise, if a good name you prize This job pray quickly settle, Leßt when rates asked to pay, m >orth« sireec they say- — " We would, but we havn't the metal." Mod-Splasher.
