Gale m Wanganui.

(Last night's Herald; It ia many years since we m Wanganui have experienced such a gale as blew last night and early this morning. Residents turned uneasily m their beds, as the wind could he heard gradually rising, and about 5 o'clock considerable fears were expressed as to the safety of their premises, for it was blowing with rentable fury. Ihe result shows that these fears were 'not groundless, and that perhaps there have 'been many miraculous escapes . from peWraiaT injury, as well as destruction to property during the night. In addition tofany quantity of fences laid low, gates pulled off their hinges, and damage to chimneys, etc., the ravages extended ag far as tearing off the iron roofs' of houses, blowing m - doors, breaking windows, etc. In Ridgway Street the corrugated iron roof of a cottage was almost literally peeled off; while at a new house m Wilson Street, Wear the Quay, one or two sheets were bent and broken off as cleanly as if done by machinery. The, iron m quite new and has no flaw, which shows the force 'of the gale. We hear of one gentleman's residence on Bell Hill m which an outer door, facing the wind, was forced m off its engines, though the gale seems to have been more sbvere m the town. On Taupo Quay a number of windows have been broken, and m the case of Mr Jackson's Pier Hotel, the glass was blown for about 5 chains along the path with a velocity that would have been dangeious to pedestrians if they had been about. The river was very rough, one boat being sunk near the bridge, but fortunately there was no shipping.
