It has » tempting character, but it is erroneous* We bear a good deal about the land being for the people, but there is really very little meaning m the cry. Everyone cannot have the land, and when we say that the land is there for the people; we; simpl y mean that it must be utilised to the best advantage for the whole community. The fallacy m this —that the books which hare been written upon this subject apply to conditions existing ia old established countries, which do not, and probably never will, exist here. The oaly remedy that has yet been devised to bring about an equal distribution of taxation is the Land Tax, which should be demanded by the people. I think our democracy should not be afraid of direct taxation. The policy of indirect taxation is to extract money from you without your being aware of it. The sooner the doctrine of dir«ct taxation is preached, and faced by the people, the better witl it be for them. By this" means inequalities m the Customs would be pi evented.
