They represented that they belonged to a schooner, and had smuggled whiskey and mm for sale. This is not the first time Purcll lias victimised publicans by fictitious sales of liquor. A public mat Parnell bought a cask of whiskey from Purcell a short time ago, the said cask containing nothing but water. Another publican at Newton purchased a quantity of brardy and rum from him, the casks being filled with water from Freeman's Bay, and wheeled up to Newman, the publican. The victims felt so humiliated that they never acquainted the police. Later.. The accused h?s been remanded; bail refused. •■•. .:. At the Sydenham Licensing Conrfc, clergymen of all denominations, and the v Woinefi of Sjdenham,"^ made vigorous efforts to prevent the granting of new licenses to nine applications. Three were granted. The granting m each case being received with hi6aes and applause. The Court sat m the Oddfel - lows' Hall, which was crowded, and the proceedings were continued from from noon till 7 o'clock. One man insinuated that a member cf the Court was interest- d in one of the houses. Dr Frankish repudiated the insinuation, and denounced it m warm terms'as an insult to the Committee. At a public meeting held yesterday m Woodcnd, it was resolved to represent to Government the injustice done by closing tbe Bioyal 'Hotel there. Geeymouth. June 9 . The Licensing Committe held their annual meeting to-day. . The principal hotels, such as those, with superior accommodation and good stabling, or of commercial character, .; were granted midnight licenses, bat all the others were only given 11 o'clock licens°s. The police strongly recommended all should be made to close at 11 v _ They also represented to the Committee that grant, ing bottle licenses was unfair to the publicans who went to great expense to provide accommodation for the public.
