The Timber Industry.

AN ENCOdfIAGING OPENING.

[Corespondent of Wellington Paper.J The great hindrance, however, to bunding m Otaki is .the terribly hijih price ot material. Although we are haltsurrounded by forests of magnificent timber, yet I believe at the present time there is not a single pair of sawjers at work m the district, and we have to get all our building timber either, from Wairarapa, via Wellington, or from Palmerston, via Foxton, the carriage so far by dray making it about double, and sometimes more than double its cost at the pit. There appears to me an ex* ceptionally good opening for anyone with a small capital to start a sawmill, and I worder no one has done so before this. I suppose want of capital is the drawback, else some one here would have had a mill running long since. Why not start a Company ? It seems the fashion nowadays. We have our Cricket Clubj our Lawn Tennis Club, our Rifle Club, our Library, all on the combination principle ; why nofc combine to start a sawmill ? lam sure it would p<y, and be a great boon to the place. I hope some practical man will steal my suggestion, and get a mill under way even before the rai way reaches us. After that, I hope no dcubt we shall have several, as some of the country close to the line is magnificently timbered. In taking a walk through the bush with a settler who had a practical knowledge ol what he was saying, he pointed out a rimu which he be'ieved would yield 10,000 fe'.t of sawn wood, and there were several *nch within sight.
