Slow Progress.
(Wanganui Herald.) 1 The formation of the railway line to , Patea is still sinking and almost night afer night it subsides to some extent. The formation seems to be ereced over a bog, and hs fust as earth is thrown m it disappea'S. On Thursday night it subsidd about foar feet, and although the contractors are d ing tbeii' utmost to cops with this* difficu't piece of work, the completion of the contract will be delayed a month at least. Messrs Wjlkie have at present t *vo engines employed m running trucks from the sand pits, but owin ar to th c continual subsidence, the work is making little progress. The crust of the bog hes risen m a rid c almost as high as the railway formation and the ground is lull of yawning gaps. The Soiling Down Company's works on the bank .of the river are now m danger, and it is feared that the bank may give" way and drive tho building and plant into the river. Ihe line would have been safer had it been run along the cliff as was suggested when the formation first gave way, but now it is hard to say when the present difficulty will be overcome.
