Mr Stevens-M.H.R.
[Wanganui Herald.] ::; "-Mr Stevens has now fiuished his meeting, and on each occasion his . reception has been hearty and enthusiastic. An attempt has been made through the columns of Sir Wm. Fox's organ $o injure him, but he can stand against the paltry and carping criticism which his opponents confine themselves to. The most extraordinary parb of it is that Mr Stevens has been blamed for not riot being more definite with regard to the railway line. The beauty of the thing is that Mr Stevens was the only member last session who took up a clear and defined stand upon the question. He is no friend of Mar ton pr. Rangitikei who would force the member to weaken his future position by promises which might, and m all probability would, be used against, him, the question of confidence ought "to \ depend on the member's conduct m the ribuse, not on idle promises on the ; platform. Mr Stevens has shown himI self worthy the confidence of his con- | stiluents, and they have been just enough to give it ; without stint. Sir | Win. Fox and his organ may wreak i their petty spite and jealousy, but they have not gained ground since the election* ':"■'"'
