The Freeman's Journal has a severe article upon the attitude assumed by the Pope m connection with the policy of the Iri>h agitators. Ib asserts that His Holiness has been misled as to the facts, and that he is acting m igno ance of the principles which actuate the leaders of the Irish agitators. Mr Sexton, member for Sligo m the House of Commons, suggests that a deputation should be sent to Rome to lay the details of the agitation before the Pope, and remonstrate with him upon the action he has taken. The disturbances which have recently arisen at Port Said have induced the i'nelish Government to strengthen their ganisons at that place. A law. has been passed m Egypt conferring the right ot voting upon every inhabitant who has attained the : age of 21 years. The Turkish Parliament willbe revived m October. The contributions of the Irish ptople towards the Parnell fund are rapidly increasing. It appears that the encyclical letter issued by the Pope, forbid- | ding subset iptions on behalf of Mr Parnell, has so far had an effect contrary to that intended by His Holiness: Bismark who was recently reported to be recovering from a severe attack of neuralgia, has suffered a relapse. He is again m a weak state, and his friends are desponien t of his recovery. A threat amount of distress prevails m Caciiar, a district of Bengal Presidency, India, consequent upon the terrible floods that have recently taken place, and a serious famine is antici--pated. A commission has been appointed to organise a scheme for the relief oi the sufferers. . A terrible* hurricane has visited Aden, causing great destruction of property. May 22, . Mr Egan has delivered an address m Chicago upon the attitude assumed by the Pope m connection with Irish affairs. He asserts that the Encyclical letter issued by the Pope to the Roman Catholic Bishops of Ireland is an unwarrantable exercise of Papal power, and urges the: Irish people to resist. We have been requested to call otten* tion to the Amendment Act of last Sesion : wherein provision is made for registering the .birth of children born m the Colony at least twelve months previous to the passing of this Act, but whose birth has not been duly registered.
