ILLEGITIMATE SPORT.
There has been seme talk lately m Wellington, says a local paper, about what is and what is not sportsman-like conduct, great stress being laid upon the virtue of a license to^shoot. But the possession of such a license no more makes a true sportsman than a doctor's diploma would. Only one thing can do it, and that is the 'true sportsman-like spirit. . A fellow who stalks about the country .-side without a license, and «ives his game fairipiayj is infinitely more cf a sportsman than the cad who, having a license, takes pot-shots without scruple; and has no respect for the gender of his birds. This season henpheasants are strictly preserved, but we regtet to hear that numbers hay« already been bagged— that there aye kites abroad careless of .consequences. We hope the rangers of districts will keep a sharp look-out and sheet, it home to all, dastardly offenders against sporting laws. If the laws are not reasonably respected, there will soon not be a head ot game left m the, district to shoot at.
