Volunteer Intelligence.

Although the Calmer ton Wfles do not nir.ster quite so strong as Companies m larger towns, yet military spirit and ardour is a prominent feature ; togpther with a laudable determination to gain efficiency m all respects. Yesterday, the corps assembled at the Town Hall fct 10 a.m , where they were drilled i by Sergant NVwcornbe, and afterwards marched by Li-utenant Carrol into the Square, where a Jeu dejoie m honour of h^r Majesty's birthday was fired, the Volunteer Band playing- after eoch round a strain of the National Anthem. This being ove-, the Company beaded by ihe band proceeded to the Butts, at FMtzhfrbert bridge, to compete for the annual prizes. Considering that moat of the men are recruits who had never before engaged m target practice, and the fact, that at the 200 and 300 yards ( ranges the position was. standing, and kneeling at 500 yards, the averages cannot be considered but fair. The following are the scores made :—

Tho prizes were divided among the four : highest scorers, and were., of the following amounts : £2 12 6d ; £1 is ; 15s; and 6s. Volunteer Walsh takes Company's medal, and bandsman Cobbe the bandsman's prize of £i Is, non- Volunteers . The weather through™ out the day was fairly good, chough at times the sun shone out rather brightly, rendering it difficult to get a fine sight. ' THE BALL was, as anticipated, a thorough success, there being a large attendance; thY music all that could be desired, and dancing being entered into with hearty spirit.
