A NARROVV* ESCAPE.
A most serious catastrophe was narrowly averted hi Djxon-Bireet, W.'llingtop,. last Monday evening. For some.days past a number of m>n were engasfed. in scoring bags of sugar on behalf of Messrs Levin & Co., m the building known as Mr A . Miller's coal and wood store, and it was m connpetion with the storing of this sugar that an accident occur led which lesulted m cons<dei able damage being done to the building and its contents, thnngh,fortanatcly; the men employed oathe premises just managed to escape with their lives. The building itse'f contains two : stories, and is partly Of brick : and^partjy of iron, one side being constructed of gal vanished iron owing to the intention of the buUderat some future time to increase the size of the building m "brickV It was m the upper storey that the bags of sugar were being deposited, ' and it eppcars that the weight ot the sugar, estimated at about; 200 tons, Was too muoh for the holding capacity'ofthe place, as the flooring gave way with a tremendous crash, and most ot the 6Ugar fell on to the heap of wood. and coal that > occupied the lower story, while the iron side of the building also felj-away. v The accident took place a minute or two after. s. o'clock, at which : hour the men had knocked off work, and luckily there was no one m tbe building tt the time, though the store* man had only just locked up the.place.
