Nelson, May 19., John PowelL was charged, yesterday with shooting a stag qn his own land at Wakapuaka during the close season. It appeared that a number of the residents had been hunting the stag, which ran pnthe defendant's land, when he went out and shot it, and nnother man, who wrs on the hills, cut its throat. Mrs Gill (a lady about 6ft; m height, and who was a witness for the defendant), after stating that others were after the deer, assured the Oqurt it was fine funV ' The said she -'was" tiot sharp enough with the knife, as others were nearer. After long arguments, the defendant was fined 10s and costs.
