New Guinea.
The following "Notps on New Guinea" appear m the Sydrey Echo, from the pen of the Rev. Mr Lawes : — NKV QUINE v NATIVES. We stayed altogether a ?reek at Tobure, and of course had plenty of na^iy ; e%viß|bout.uß : all the time. They are a fair sampie of the inland tribes of this pßrt of New Guinea. They are darker incclor than coast tribes ;• they are mostly small m stature, though some have a fine physique. From the character of the country, all hill and valley, t : ey have a very pecular gait. Th^ey^walk on level ground as if they didn't know how. ■ They were very kind and hospital to us, and perfectly honesty ; ;JVlr:G6ldie, who had his camp m. this districtior many month's l^ speaks m, i, the, highest terms of thent.- Their honesty is. iWonderful. Nothing can be more fruittnl than the gullies and' valleys-! m; . which , they make '* their gardens. Fruit is m consequence ; vjfery : plentiful. , ;They have splendid sugar- 1 cane^good taro, and a variety :of fine bananas n> a Th ey - are very fond of chr w- ! i°g ginger, and ol course the betel iiptH Salt is m great demand.
