The Poriraa section, it'may be 'ex-f plained, cpioQprises^a,)eng%of about 10| miles of railway, starting from the end of the section for. . w.hich,^, tender was recently accepted, and ending at a point where the Poriru'a harbour is crossed by a bridge. Two crossings of the road were originally prdposed by the company to which proposal the Council entered an objection, and theobj°ct Of an official visit :paid to thejlocality on Wednesday was to ascertain, if a plan .could not be devispd by which the Council's objection could be overcome. In determining upon the crossings m question the company had m view a saving of ex 4 pense. The result of the visit is, we understand, that the company has agreed to abandon this proposal, and by taking the line outside the road alto-: gether dispense with the necessity of more thin one crossing, which will be at the Porirua Ferry. The effect o( this alteration will vhbt* j .we. : believe,! make any material difference, either one way or the other, m respect to the; cost of the section. Tenders have been) invitedfor the work for some time past and at the desire of some southern con-i tjactors,'. whb. thought the time for ac---cepting a tender was scarcely long! enough, the company, as will be seen: from 'an advertisement elsewhere, have decided to extend a period until the 29thj instant. Twenty-,tvKT months will b?| allowed for the completion of the work! from the acceptance of a tender; and; already plans are being prepared for a I further section of£four or five miles, so> that it will be seen the company are losing no time m pushing on the undertaking. The Poriraa section will include 1 a work which, when finished, will be; one ot the " sights" of the Wellington, district. :, This consists of an immense: viaduct, which will cross a gully of 12.0) feet m the deepest part, an'! having a ! length of about 328 (eet. The viaductj which is to be built m the vicinioy of the " Half-way House," near Johnson™ yille, with wind-guards, so as to pre-j vent a repetitioniof>the memorable Tayi Bridge" catastrophe Altogether the comoany are to be be congratulated on the (energy bpirig displayed m proceeding with the work.
