Manawatu Standard PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verite. FRIDAY, MAY 11, 1883. CHEESE EXPORT.
We are glad to observe that the con» signment of cheese recently sent by the ABhburton Cheese factory to Sydney, as an experiment, was viewed with favour, and from a repor* presented at a meeting of Directors, held recently, it appears that it will letch from 8d to 9d a pound in.the New South Wales market. For- cheeses of 50! b weight the latter price. can easily be obtained, while ■Alin»q-p£ Vt-n-v wi-.cv ago-.worth more. It was also stated at the meeting that, m anticipation of sending a consignment to England by the British Queeu, the packing of 10 tons of cheese is to be commenced forthwith, and the directors have every hope of obtaining the bonus offered by the Government. The heating apparatus recently erected m the factory is working well, and is doing good service m hastening on the ripen^ ing of the cheese. This news should stimulate the inhabitants of Manawatn to move m the matter of the establishment of cheese factories. After perusal of Mr Monrad's comprehensive little work, to which we referred yesterday, we can plainly see that it only requires co-operation on the part of the settlers to set the affair m motion. The cost of machinery would not be great, and a small company, with economical management, should achieve success beyond the 6hadow of a doubt. It must be apparent to our community that times m Paluierston are not so good as they were ; money is less plentiful ; business people are complaining ; and there is a lull everywhere all over the district. The simple fact is, as w« have pointed out times and again, we have been depending too much —m fact almost altogether, on the expenditure of foreign capital, either m the shape of outlay for public works, or ot the investment of outside capitalists m real estate. It stands Jto reason this cannot go on for ever. People were led to understand that once the West Coast railway was started, prosperity would be straightway the order of the day. Well, |he first contract from Palmerston southwards has been going on for some months, and we have not heard one remark that ny perceptible change for the better has made itself apparent m any business channel. Last winter there was a large expenditure for bushfalling ; this winter, there will be but a small proportion. Those who it was expected would have been employing labour to a considerable extent m the work of improvement of their recenily*acquired bush properties, are not doing so ; and on all sides the outlook m not as encouraging as could be desired. This is the result to a great extent of our position as non»producers, or rather non-manufacturers. We re« peat what we have affirmed scores of times before, and what we will continue to agitate for, that until we h»ve local industries established m our midst, permanent prosperity will not be our portion. Local industries will place us m a position that the expenditure of public money, the prosecution of public works, the profits of lund speculation, even on a most fabulous scale, will never bring about. If we had a few more practice} , publicaspirited, enthusiastic advocates
of local industry like Mr Monrad m our midst, there would be an end of the complaints of bad times and scarcity of money that is now the prevailing cry on all sides, go where you will.
