THE CHIEF MATE OF THE HUIA DROWNED.
(BY TELEGRAPH. V . ....'.' ■■ , (tTNITE»> PHESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, This Day. The Huia arrived" from Wangaaui at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Her chief officer Capt. Alex. Murphy was lost overboard during the passage. It appears that he was io charge of the deck. After leaving Wanganui, whan, about 23 miles from that port, he was seen to fall overboard, and it is supposed that the suction drew him underneath the vessel and he was struck by the propeller as he was not seen afterwards. -There- is^ mystery as to what caused him to fall overboard, but its surmised that while standing 'beside the rail he fell asleep and want over the side. Murphy leaves a wife and four children residing m Wellington, iAn enquiry will be held. The flags m town were lowered half mast m respect of his memory. •
