Casey pleaded guilty to stealing from the pocket of a feilowworker, m the harvest field, a purse and £20 13s, and was sentenced to twelve months' hard labor. Charles Sullivan, charged with rape on a foung girl of thirteen years at Waimatuku, pleaded not guilty. The proof was mo^t clear and conclusive, and he was found guilty. His Honor, m passing santence, ssid the prisoner had been convicted of the most brutal offence* o£ rape he had ever to deal within his experience, and sentenced htm to twelve year's penal servitude, with twentyxfire lashes whh tho cat on Monday next, and twenty-five m a month hence. The audience applauded, Sullivan gave his age as forty eight, and said he had been m the asylum at New "Sork four years ago, and was discharged before he was cured ot insanity, and professed to remember nothing about the offence, having been drunk.
