A settler at Mur ering Beach, near Otago Heads, a place which takes its name from the murder by the Maoris located there many y^ars ago o' a whaling boat's crew, has, whilst plou • fains, unearthed the greenstone figure of the Maori ? od, Tiki. It is about fiv« 1 inches m height, and is a grotesquelookmg object, the god b'ing represented m a squatting position, with his j legß joined together. He has his arms akimbo, and with big staring eyes m the top of the head. A hole has been drilled for the purpose of putting a string through, so as to suspend the figure. ' \ Nelson, This Day. At about half-past 3 o'clock yesterday morning a fim broke out m the Thistie Hotel, Bridge-street, and the building was gutted, but the adjoining property was uninjured. The only occupants were the owner, Mr George Adam, and his Bister, who were awakened by a sound of burning wood, and had only just sufficient time to escape. The Bishop of Nelson returnei home yesterday morning after an absence of , fifteen months. Bunting was displayed m his honor, and last night a public welcome was accorded him m the Provincial Hall, where, m the presence of a large assembly an address of welcome was presented to His Lordship. The Bishop m his speech referred to a variety of subjects, and spoke very touchingly ot the late Archbishop of Canterbury. Chkistohurch, This Day. At Rangiora on Monday evening Mr J. Wilson, M.ff.R. for Kaiapoi, stated that his health had been so indifferent i since his return from Wellington, that I if it did not improve he did not think he should be warranted m attending another session's wo<k. Mr Wilson, M.H.R., and Captain Russell, members of the West Coast Kail way Commission arrived by the Manapouri yesterday, and had a meeting with Mr Napier Bell, at Canterba y 1 College, and elected Captain Kussell chairman. They will proceed to take evidence immediately, and afterwards will probably inspect the various routes | proposed for the live. Richard Bowen whilst driving a steam engine working a threshing machine, was caught m the fly wheel of the engine. His left arm was torn off, and the right so injured that amputation was necessary, aud he sustained a compound fracture of the left pelvis Spite of all, he is doing fairly well, with a slight probability of saving his life. Serious deficiencies have been found m the Kainpoi Borough Council accounts, and the books are m a state of . inextricable coufusion.
