Gold at Murimotu.
[Wanganui Herald-] We understand that a settler at Murimotu has mada an important dis-cove-y of gold-b^arin? quartz taken from a reef at the farther extremity of Marinaotn. The report which has reached as states that the specimen shows good gold, and the reef is a pretty extensive one, bat this requires confirmation. It has long been supposed that gold existed m the interior, and many prospectors have traversed,^ the country pretty well, but without any satisfactory results, and although •■ quartz may have been previously dis* covered on the Plains, we have not ?* heard of it having been found associated with sufficiently good prospects. Some years ago some excellent specimens of Quartz, showing a good percentage of gold, were discovered m the Bangitikei River by Mr Rees, and this went far : to confirm the impression that a goldfi'ld yet remained to be found m the m • erior. There is already a rumour of one or two parties being formed to piospect the country, but the Maoris are very suspicious, and would probably do their utmost to oppose any such prospect m the locality, and the individual prospectors who have hitherto pushed their way into tha interior have found it necessary to exercis* great precaution.
