News from Ohinemutu states 'that an event affording considerable amdsement and consternation occurred on Saturday. The statue of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, lately presented to tha Arrawas, was being placed m position m Tamanukapna, when a cirt arrived with an escort of police, who took possession of the statue, and carried it off to the lock-up. No reason is given for the proceediags. ■ Wellington,- This Day. Capt. Russell and VTr Wilson, M. H.R's., members of the West Coast Railway Commission, left by the Manapouri for Christchurch yesterday afternoon, where they join their colleague, Mr Napier Bell, and at once comoience their work. Mr J. G. Grey, of the Hansard staff, has been appointed Secretary to the com** mission, and accompanies then*. The annual meeting of tha Wellington Shipping Company lapsed for wane of a quorum. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £3770, out of which the directors recommend payment of a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent.
