Manawatu Standard PUBLISHED DAILY. Suivant la verite. SATURRDAY, APRIL 21, 1883. CONTEMPORARY OPINION.
In our article of yesterday, we referred to the Redmond mission as being likely to exercise a prejudicial influence on the Colonies as a wholn, as well socially and politically, as on our reputation outside. This aspect of the question should not escape attention. In supporting this latter contention, we cannot possibly do better than reproduce the following 1 pertinent remarks anent the Redmond mission from- oar able, outspoken, and independent contemporary, the Federal Australian, which thus writes : — " .No other people on the face of the earth, but the Irish, ever dream of inviting us to take part m their everlasting agitations and never-ceasing faction fights. Every now and then there comes to our shoreß from the Emerald Isle an emissary charged with a mission to enlist Australian sympathisers ia a Home- Rule, or a National, or a Land League, or sdme of the endless succession of banded societies of Irishmen who are ever beat upon accomplishing some project of revolt agsiinst their landlords and the English rule. And, invariably, the sympathy means " ready money down" m all these Hibernian cases. It is an inevitable circumstance that the funds of the new league should bb at lowwater mark, and that contributions are argently needed to save poor Ireland from being " grouod under the heel of a foreign despotism." The hat is eternally bein,- handed round for peace. Bow, if it were a matter of mere pecuniary assistance alone, th« itinerating rmisaary and his beggarly mission would not be ' worthy of a single word of passing comment. But the fact is trumpeted abroad that the Australian people are expressing their deep sympathy with the poor downtrodden Irish people, and are giving their money freely to assist them m their object. Nothing can be faker to fact than that statement. But the ialsehood goes abroad, and is believed, to the serious damage of our reputation as a loyal British community."
