The whole' 'afternoon Waß spent m discussing a .petition tor the" Legla* lature praying^pr grants to, denomination al schools^ arid for '" scriptural teaching m the State schools. The Rev. Mr Fitchett, of bunedin, 1 unfolded a : lengthy scheme of his own. ?Uh r e^sßen.ce ;of it consisted m the abandonment" :of education by the State m centres jof population^ the existing schools to be handed ever to the different denominations to work. In the scattered districts the Government were to carry.oaihe schools, rating the people of the district for their support, the vJovernment merely to examine the certificate teachers, to put aside a sum, aayi £50,000; Veto be awarded m scholarships, and,, to enforce a compulsory attendance. All children whose parents could not pay school fees to be educated free. The debate was adjourned. r :
