The Comet.
Mr John Tebbut, m a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald on the subject of the great, comet, says : — " It is now prety certain that the comet, though moving m. a pach n,ear the sun resembling very mnch that of the great cemets of 1843 and 1880, is not identical witn either of those bodies. From its partial disintegration during its present apparition it appears* probable that all three comets were m some remote age physically connected. Your readers are probably aware that a small te'escop'c comet was detected by Dr. Schmidt, of Athens, on otober 8, only tour degrees distant from the great comet, and moving 1 iv a somewhat similar orbit. Several other extremely faint come tic objects wore also seen about the same time, and ia the same part of the sky, by amateurs m the United States. In conclusion, it may be mentioned that the great comet, which was never within ninety millions of miles of the earth, has now receded to a distance of three hundred millions."
