THE SECOND MATE AND A SEAMAN DROWNED.
('BY TELEGRAPH.) (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, April 2. The barque Malay, bound from Newcastle (New Soubh Wales) for Honolulu with 1100 tons of coal on board, put m here yesterday afternoon m a leaking condition . Captain Peterson reports that he left Newcastle on the 18th March. When the vessel was m lati. 33, 15 S., long, 175, 13 W., it began to blow from the S.E., and the gale quickly increased to a fierce hurricane. The vessel was then under balanced reefed moinsailed, lower topsail, and foretopsail skysail. At half-past 3 a.m. the vessel was struck on the starboard, bow by a heavy sea, which carried away the boats, forward house, and everything on deck. The same sea took the second mate and one of the men overboard, and they were never Been agfain. The cabin and every state room were flooded. The cargo shifted to the port side, and the vessel was on her beam ends. The vessel was found to be making water, and the men were m consequence lasbed to the pa raps for seven hours. The gale abating, the vessel managed to make Auckland.
