Wetere, the Mokau chief, who escorted Mr Hursthonse, arrived at Alexandra yesterday night, and reports that under pretence of goin? on to viokau he escaped from the-party who stopped them. He says "most of the party were stepped ot their clotheß m defending Messrs Hursthonse and Newsbam, whom they had surrounded. His men, seeing the determination of the attacking party, boke oft stirrup, leathers anrt irons to defend themselves and Europeans. Seeing the danger of bloodshed, Waters called upon them to d-sist, when all left for the settlement, eich prisoner being guarded. At j re«« sent the fiv men are m different houses. Werere has interviewed Wahanui since at Kopua He is very indignart at the affair, and has sent out nrssengers m all diiections m the locality to | assemble to-m now to release them, or accompany them through, Mr Bryce having put the responsibility on him. The party of sixty men despatched by Wahnnui, accompanied by Mr Wilkinn son, nstiv.; »gent, to release Mr Hursthouse and party, found, on their arrival »t ' 'toran^a, a large number of natives assembled there, who informed them that Welere's brother, Hanstituatabu, with Te Ko>ti, Teuhana and seventy natives,forcib'y released Mr Hursthouse, Mr New^am, and Te Haera, from the natives who had them m custody. They found the prisoners stripped and chained up. Teraahuki's party were seized m turn and tied up by the rescuers, who marched them to Te Euiti's pa. Wbanui's brother was the first to break open the house where the prisoners were chained. Wahanui did not accompany the party, having gone on to Punui to send on a number of natives from there, ihe natives at Te Uira are excessively angry at the rescue. The prisoners are said to have erected a gallows to hang Mr Bryne if he comes there. Te Kooli took Mr Hursthouse's party safely to Te Kuiti, supplying them with clothes at'd boots, of which they had bi>en stripped when captured. Wahanui has tsone to Kiuikihi to confer with Rewi. Alexandra, March 23. The following iR the message sent down by special messenger from «'torohanga : — About '60 of us left Kopua this morning at about haifpast 9 o'clock, arriving here. There had been a message sent down to meet us with news to the effect that Hursrhousa and others who were with him haJ been rescued by about 60 of the NgatimaniapotOj who arrived at Uira settlement a little past eight tbis morning. Tho Miniapotos went down to where they w-re imprisoned and madu prisoners of all ihe Tekamarua who tried to oppose the lelievinti pa;ty. After securing Kurstht use and party they found they wer<! bound, a.'!d seemed to all appearances to have had nothing to eat since they were taken. Hur-thquse and his party are at present at Kuiii m charge of Tanui te Whanui and Te Kooti.
