A PROTEST.

(to the editor op the standard.) Sir, — Will 7011 kindly insert the following, m justice to myself, as I see m the Manawatu Daily Times of Wednesday evening last a nasty slur, reported m a loc*l by the " Town Joker" stating that when passing the police station on Monday night he heard tnnsic m the shape of a duet. Now this I flatly deny, and I think the editor of that paper will do himself little good by publishing such falsehoods, as I can assure you. for the credit of myself and those concerned, there was nothing londef than low J whispering between myself and Peck. Now* Sir, I hope injustice to myself, and not to prejudice my case on my trial, newepapeis will do me thu justice of publishing the bare truth, as I sen m the Wanganui Chromcle several untruths which are too numerous to mention. — I am, &c, J. I think h« should be the last to play off any of hia sidy "town jokes" on me, as h» knnws what it is to he m trouble him* self. Now he is a pillar of the (Jhurch, and Thope a rep^ntanc sinner.
