Manawatu Standard PUBLISHED DAILY.) S vant la vente. THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1883. FURTHER NATIVE OBSTRUCTIONS.
By telegraph we learn that Messrs Hursthousb and Newsham, with Wetbbe and a native escort have been forcibly stopped near Kniti by a number of Te Whim's Paribaka followed led by a man named Makuki. Weterb has come down to see Wahanui. The latter says he will overcome the obstruction and see the matter through. A correspondent at Alexandra has telegraphed as follows m reference to the obstruction to Mr Hursthouse add the survey party: — ' ' Wetere Re bnga, who has just come back, states that the opposition to the progress of the party was owing to Mr Hursthouse being known to ,the Paribaka prisoners. They said the Lord had delivered him into their hands. Wahanui starts at daybreak." I ater intelligence is to the effect that Wahanui has sent for men to Punui, Managa, Roronga, and other places, to force the party through, If he cannot get strength enough he will call on the Government, who have re« ceived information from Mr Bryoe of the obstruction to Mr Hursthouse and his party, and also that Wahanui has expressed a desire that no action be taken by Government until "h« (Wahanui) has had an opportunity of inquiry into the matter. It is very acparentNcom all this that after all the soft soap of the. Native Department, and all the assurances so lavishly given, that the projected survey will almost certainly entail serious complications with the Natives, the ultimate consummation of which it is impossible to predict even with approximate accuracy of conjecture.
