An Artesian Well.

A true overflowing Artesian, well, topping the ohalk formation, has just been carried out m the neighborhood of Woking. The waterworks company, established for the supply of that district, has, for the last - six months, been sinking a large shaft at West Gland on, through the London and plastic clays, and, a few days ago, the chalk water-bed was touched by it at a depth of 310 ft. below ground, when the water immediately rose m the shaft, finally overflowing the siirface at a height of 200 ft. over sea-^level. Ifc is not often that a well sunk for over SOOft* m dry soil touches a spring strong enough to overflow the surface, and it must be a source of considerable gratification to those interested m the project to know that the anticipations of the engineers have been so comnletely rpalised.
