BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held today to take into consideration the dispute existing beween thaTown and the Volunteer Band and as to what should be done mth the bund instruments m charge of Town Clerk:— Present — Crs Jensen (Mayor), Linton, Fergason, Leary, Mowlem, Snelson, and McNeil. Two letters were read from th 9 disputing parties asking for the instruments. : ■ '. . . Mr Carroll was called upon to ex* plain the matter m dispute. Ha stated at a metting of Volunteers that the Volunteers agreed to take over the Ha— i bilities of the Band for th° instruments. They did not know when making the purchase that the instruments did not belong to the band, but subsequently found that they belonged to the Council. He was sure that they could get players if they had the ins.ruments. Mr Meyrick stated that the instruments had only, been given till the liability had been met, and mentioned at the meeting that the instruments did not belong to the band. He was quite positive that they couid not get players. The Council went into committee on I the question, and brought up the following report.-— That the Council hand over to the Volunteer Company the brass instruments now m dispute for the purpose of being used on parade, and for any other public purpose at any time and place the Band may think fit to play, without having m any way (as far as this Council is concerned) to consult with any one particularly. The Council bavin» power at any time to call m the instruments if it considers that they are not being honestly used for the purpose for which they fire now lent. Proposed that this report hi adopted by Cr G. M. Snelson, seconded by Or Linton, and carried.
