Manawatu Highway BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the above ' was held yesterday at the office of the Board : Present. — Messrs Skerman (chairman), Edwards, Newcome, Engels, and McEwen. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.— CORRESPONDENCE . The Chairman, Manawatu Highways Board. Dear Sir. — As many of our readers see no other paper bufc the 8t % nd\sd, and have repeatedly asked us to publish your announcements, we are prepared, in their interests, and unier the circumstances of the Board's embaras»ed financial position, to publish its advertisements gratuitously, and will be obliged to. you if you will instruct the Clerk to forward to us for insertion. We still think that the Stakdahd is fairly entitled to a share of the Board's ad« vertising, but under existing circumstances, and in consideration of the re-* qairenients of our readers, we make the above proposal— l have, &c. Alex. McMinn. Proposed that the advertisements be inserted in both papers. It was too much to ask the proprietor of the Standard to insert the advertisements gratuitously, and it was only a matter ot justice to let that paper have a share, being also necessary in the interests of the ratepayers. From G. J. Bruce, re sums granted for road works in the Taonui riding. It appeared that the application for a grant for the Bunnythorpe road had not been sent in, through some neglect on the part of the Council, and the following resolutions were passed :— That the Manawatu Highway Board request Mr Bruce to obtain from the County Council, or the Government, copies of the correspondence re the late application for funds, under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. That the Mauawatu Road Board cannot but express its annoyance at the gross-carelessness displayed by the executive ot the County Council in neglecting to forward the application for the funds necessary for the metalling of the Bunnythorpe Road, and trusts that the negleeb may be remedied as far a9 possible Dy an application before the 30th June next. Froia Mr Hurat, to put fence across road. Granted. From Mr E. J. Armstrong, with proposal re preparing plans &c, for new works. Accepted with thanks. From S. Standen, re being excessivoly rated. Proposed that half the amount be remitted. From J. D. Hewitt with account for buehfailing, Held ove\ : From Public Works Office, re monies to be spent in Fitzherbert. Stating thac L4OO would be available as eoon as new loan was floated. From J. Sperry, Property Tax Commissioner, re correcting inaccuracies in statement of values. Letter from Purveyor-General, re LIOO to be expended in making roads in Fitzherbert. From Andrewarthur Bros., re the above, and asking for settlement of account for work done. Petition from a number of settlers in Robert's Line, requesting that the Board would metal the road. The Board could not do anything in the matter. From Treasury, with LB6 4s;. also that there remained L253 4s 5d at credit of Board for the Kairanga district, it would be expended as soon as plans of worko were approved by the Waste Lands Board. RES9LUTIONS. Proposed that tenders be called for stumping about 70 chains of Heiley's Line of Road, with the necessary, culverts, and that such tenders are to be advertised, to be sent in by the next meeting of this Board. Mr Newcombe and Mr Edwards voted for this resolution, and the chairman, Messrs Engles and McEwen voted against; it waß therefore lost, Mr Edwards also moved a resolution for work to be done on Knight's Line, which was also lost. TENDERS. Neils Anderson, LI 4s lOd per chain, for work done on Fitzherbert Road — Accepted. Metalling Cooper's Line — J. C. Na«« than, LI 17s 6d per chain — Accepted. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Carroll waited upon ehe Board re making outlet from his land for the water lying there. A committee was appointed to inspect the work and report at next meeting. Mr Milvertou and Mr Wiltshire waited on Board re Borough making drain, and thereby flooding their land, referred to the Borough Council . 'Messrs Engels and Newcombe had a MISCELLANEOUS. hard fight over the LSOO granted for roads in Fitzherbert, which culminated ' in the following resolutions and amend- ' ment. That the Government grant of LSOO for Fitzherbert be allocated to the different wards in ratio in the rates raised in these wards. Proposed by Engels seconded Mr MeEwen and carried — That the whole of the LSOO special grant be entirely spent in No 4 Ward, as that ward's wants are greatest. Proposed by Newcomej seconded by Edwards—rejected. That the Waste Lands Board be re* quested to sanction the application of the sum of L69 4s 6d and L29 l?s 2d for the clearing bush in front of sections 1596 and 1595, Kairanga Block. Proposed that Mr He be allowed L6 to go to Wellington, and 6d.for each signature obtained there and in the district to petition re separation. That the Secretary communicate with the Kiwitea Highway Board, informing them that the Board cannot accept their proposal, and unless the settlement is made the Government would be applied to to appoint an arbitrater. Mr Bkerman was authorised to expend L7 in clearing out drain. The meeting then adjourned till next Saturday week.
