Shocking Affair.
A steel merchant, named Thomas WhUehead, living at Sheffield, had for some few days been s-n^ular m his manner, and after lying m bed all one day, hecame downstairs m the evening talking m a rambling m inner. He] then stripped himself naked, and m the absence of his wife took the baby frem the cradle and dashed its brains ouf," The mother came m just at the time; but too late to save the'cnild. He was arrested at Sheffield late the same nigtt. on a charge of murdering his infant child, but died on the following morning m the police cells from acute delirium tremens. While m his cell he made a violentattackontheofficer whobrou-ht him medicnie. Five constables were afterwards m attendance until his death. Se was raving mad, and the police had struggles: with him, al night. .
