Pure Bred Stock- .-•-. '— - — ■♦— — During the last year (says a Home paper) there has been uriusally few shorthorn sales, and prices have con* tinned to fall. Only 1588 head have been sold, against 1738 m 1880 and 2811 m 1878. About three years ago Sir Henry Allsopp gave 6000 guineas for two Duchess cows for his own choice herd at Hendlip, and a year later Lord Feversbam gave 200 guineas for a heifer whose dam had cost 4000 guineas. Seven years ago" prices were stilt higher, and. averages of 100 guineas were quite common ; but there has been a 'ruinous rebound. The average of the 85 sales held this season was only £34 17s, although selections from aU the most famous herds have been sold, the beat being £83, that of the Kent herd of Mr St. John Ackers, the highest price of tta year was 730 guineas, paid by the Duke of Devonshire for a shorthorn heifer from America, for his herd at Holker, Lord Beaucbamp's herd at Madresfi Id was sold off m the summer, but th 9 average for 96 animals was only £34. :
