Education Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yeßterday. Present — Messrs W. H. j Watt (chairman), Sanson, Baker, [ Bridge, Snelson, Sir W. Fox, and the Key. J. Ross. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Appointment Committee. — Mrs Jordan's resignation as teacher at Stoney Creek was accepted, and the appointment of a successor was left m the hands of the Finance Committee. — A letter was received from the Jackeytown committee accepting Mr Mathieson as teacher. r l he teacher ab Halcombe.— The con-, duct o^ Mr Harris, teacher at Halcombe, who had been lettinsr the school residence and receiving the rent, was considered. — The Chairman made a re>» port, of which the following is a summary : — The pierious reporc made by the Secretary was fuHy justified. It was his intention to send for Mr Harris, to afford him an opportunity of explaining anything he wished, but on featurday, the 30th ult., In appeared m Wanganui, and interviewed the Chairman of the. Board m the presence of the Secretary. He excused himself first on the plea that he received tho School Committee's consent, to let tne house ; second," he had not made a monetary gain, inasmuch as he tat the house for 4s per week, and has occupied another costing him 10s per week ; thirdly, the road is not situated on a metalled road, and the health of Mrs Harris demanded that she should reside m a place of easy access to the school. — Mr Bridge said that Mr Harris should be called up to answer the following questions ; — l. Why did he leave the house, and on' what authority ? 2. Did he behave ! himself m an unseemly manner at the householders' meeting ? 3. Also to explain his insolent conduct at the Board room when he interviewed. Mr Watt. After long- deliberation it w,is unani* mousy resolved on the motion of Mr Baker, seconded by Mr Sanson, that Mr Harris, so far as the school purchase was concerned, is free from blame ; that his conduct m not consulting the Board as to the letting of the teacher's residence, and the disposal of the money received as rent is highly censurable, and that he be directed to pay to the Board the rent received immediately-; that he be called upon to make a satisfactory written apology to the Chairman of this Board for his conduct towards him m the Board-room while attempting lo justify his conduct m the matter of renting the residence; that Mr Harris' conduct at the pubic meeting was unbecoming from every point of view, and, looking at the relation which ought to exist between the teacher and those amongst whom he lives, the Board are of opinion that be cannot remain at Halt, combe. — It was understood that another position will be found for Mr Harris as soon as possible, the matter being left to the appointmdnts committee. Otaki. — A letter was read from Mr Joseph Death, objecting to tUe election of the School Committee on the ground that two brothers residing m one house and a boarder at an hotel, voted. — It was resolved to ascertain from the chairman of the meeting of householders

whether the alleged voting irregularities tcok place. Committee Returns. — The Secretary reported that twenty School Coaimitteea had forwarded incomplete returns, and five none at all. — It was resolved, That no further money be voted to any Committees until they furnish their annual balance-shnpts.
