Thomas Jeffries, who was riding a spirited horse near Eangiora yesterday was thrown, and found unconscious on the road. :He was taken to- the Hospital and found to be suffering from concussion of the brain. His Excellency the Governor consents to become a patron ,pf the flew Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Greymouth, Feb. 17. The island between the two parts of the upper Waitaki Bridge has been partially washed away, and the traffic is suspended. The steamer Penguin arrived this morning and. landed her passengers, but a northerly gale * so* tting m about 10 o'clock she had to leare the roadsted for Manukau. and several intending passengers were accordingly left behind. Bishop Cowie arrived last evening, having came overland via Napier. -
