LOCAL AND GENERAL.
There is great excitement m Auckland over the reported discovery of diamonds, and the province is now apparently teem* ing with its precious stones, specimens being brought, m from the Lower Wai* kato. ■■ At the Hawke's Bay County Council Mr Sutton, M.H.R., 1 read a telegram from Government, stating it was impos* sible to say what proportion of the money applied for under the " Roads and Bridges Construction Act " would be nl« I6t^ed,but at Waipawa Mr Smith.M.H.R., was able to produce a telegram stating that half the sum applied for will he granted ; Mr Snelaon is advertising for a horse and second hand trap and harness. Special attention ia directed to Messrs Freeman and Wylds advertisement for tenders for totara block, which will be found elsewhere m this page. ,

The Wanganni Bridge is to be freed from tolls soon, the Borough and County Councils contributing their quota towards the loss thereby sustained by the Harbor Board. Through a mis-print the word tram accident m a Sydney cablegram published onMonday was made to read train acci» dent. A handy practical man, and a good mechanic, is anxious to hear of a situa* tion. The programme of the Produce Stakes to be run under^the auspices of the Man« watu Racing Club appears elsewhere. A gentleman m the R.M. Court, a stranger to the district,, remarked that he had travelled all over the colonies, and never heard such trumpery cases as those brought by the Railway Department, which he characterized as simply disgraceful ; and he further expressed his surprise that the public put up with such .petty official tyranuy. We don't think they will be inclined to put up with it much longer, "X" inquires was there not another candidate for Licensing' Bench honours than those whose names have been officially notified ? We hear that there was another nomination form, bat do mot know what became of it. * A very disgraceful and indecent act was perpetrated at the Foxton Ball, and it is surprising the offender has not been discovered. The act was of a nature to which it would be almost impossible to refer m print, and wai discreditable even to a " hoodlum." Mr J. B. Hamilton's altered advertisement will appear to-morrow. It is rumoured that Mr Haultain has applied to be transferred te Auckland, and that it is just possible his request may be conceded. The adjourned meeting m connection with the Dramatic Club is to take place this evening. The " shilling»in " game is to be strictly interdicted: Members are to be tried m their various specialties, and initiated m the mysteries of right and left side entrance, trap-door exit, blue-fire, transformation scenes, stage thunder, &c. Tbe services of a man with a hurdy* gurdy and a monkey with a scarlet jicket can be secured on moderate terms. Several letters to the editor are still unavoidably held over. A large bush fire was raging m the Fitzherbert direction this atternoon. Others, are to. be started within the next few days.! All interested are reminded of Messrs Stevens and Gorton's stock sale at Awahuri to take place to-morrow at the firm's yards at that junction. The commercial report of Messrs Stevens\and Norton's sale at the Borough Yards is m type, but is unavoidably held over, having had to give place to other matter. It is reported that a petition is being got up for signature praying for the removal of the Palmerston Stationmaster. Wollerman'a Brewery is now kept working night and day supplying the requirements - of a very extensive circle of patrons. Latterly it has had to refuse orders all over the district through sheer inability to execute them, owing to the trade being so very large. Mr Morton Jones, Wanganui manager of the South British Insurance Company, and Mr Bennet, the acting agency inspector, have been making a round of offical visits m Rangitikei and Manawatu during the last few days. , We have not been able to make room for new advertisements lately received, but will endavour to find space for them after this week. Inspector James to«day paid his usual offical visit of inspection to Palmerston j having been down as far as Foxton and Otaki yesterday. ' ■ ■. " f
