Manawatu Standard PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verites THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1883. CAPITALIST IMMIGRATION.
The Press generally throughout the Coloiiy is strongly m favour of capitalist immigration. The Auckland Horald [ considers that there is not an interest, I there is not an industry, there is not a glimmering of progress or prosperity, , but Would be quickened by capitalist immigration. There is not a possessor of landed estate, not an owner ol herds and flocks, not a holder of banking or insurance shares, not a man m business, not a possessor of a suburban lot or cottage ; there is not a lawyer or doctor, there is not a carpenter or mason, not a bootmaker or tailor, there is not a labourer with only . his own strong muscles, whose house is th»tohed when his hat's on ; there is not a colonist from the highest to the lowest, but his wealth, his prospects, or his possibilities wonld be enhanced by >a steady streani. of capitalist immigration ; while to the Treasury it would bring immediate pro« fit on the outlay, with an ever-expand-ing source of revenue to provide the "ways and means," and to lilt the present heavy pressure of the public ' debt.
