Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Survant la verites TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1883. THE LIBRARY GRANT.
The examination of the numerous ap« plications received from the libraries throughout the colony for a share of the £6000 graht-in-aid, voted by Parlia* menc last session, is now (says the Post) complete. It is founi that 360 are m due and regular form, and that a number of libraries are consequently entitled to share m the grant. A careful calculation of the share which each has a right to claim has led to the conclusion that the grant will jyield at the rate of 5s 2d and fifteen-sixceenths of a penny— or as nearly a$ possible 5s 3d for every £1 of income derived by the various institutions from their various sources. -This is not very much, perhaps, but it will be a most acceptable nelp to many struggling libraries. la order to ensure that every library, however small its income (or even if this be nil), shall receive something from the grant, a nominal addition of £25 wilt be made to every income for the purposes of calculation, so that the 5s 2d odd per £1 will really be paid on such income plus this supposititious £25.
