A PLEA FOR THE ABSENT.
(to the editor of the standard.)
Sir, — I think, with the writer of the letter m yesterday's Standard, that the sneers at thejtov. Mr Wilson are most uncalled for, unjust, and cruel. I am «ure even those who have suffered ppcuniary loss foel a certain amount of sympathy with the rev. gentleman, who, m mv humble opinion, has been more sinned against than sinning. I venture to say that no other denomination would have allowed such a scandal m connec™ tion with their minister. I feel ashamed that your contemporary should ! have written of Mr Wilson as he has dono. Is there any proof that our late clergyman inteuded levanting? Had wp all our sing written on our foreheads how would some of us look ? I think that Borne of those who have rplntlessly persecuted Mr Wilson have no rpason to feel proud of their conduct. But if the Press sneers and encourages, what else can be expected ? I ft>el pleased to think that the Manawatu Standard did not follow the line that some thought it would m eference to the Hey. Mr Wilson. Weil may he pxelaim "Save me from my friends." — I am, &c, Fair Play.
