Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Survant la verites THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1883. A TRUMPERY CASE.
♦ The Railway Department to«.day mado it elf supremely ridiculous by instituting proceedings against certain hotel, porters for beina'ou the platform, and, as alleged, " touting." We never knew a more trumpery case, and were pleased to see the tt.M. had the good sense to dismiss it. The porters of the hotels are distinguished by badges, ant' therefore do not require to " tout". : They are simply there to carry passengers' luggage; but even to this the august personages who manage railway affairs oa this line are opposed, whence to« day's proceedings. '• What am I arrested for?" once said a vagrant to a policeman. "For being alire," roared the constable; and with equal justice has this most vexatious official inter* ference been called into requisition m the case of the hotel-porters.
