Commenting on the satisfaction felt m New Zealand at the establishment of direct steam communication with Eng<land, the Australasian says ; — " It is scarcely to be expected that our Melbourne merchants and shipowners will view this change m the : same spirit of satisfaction. Bub they are perfectly aware that the loss of the New Zealand trade, or a great part of it, is a condition which Melbourne must look on to when the time arrives that the colony is able to take its importing business wholly ioto itsown hands. We m Victoria have done all we could towards -expediting this state o of things, by the prohibitive fiscal system by which we have chosen to hamper and encumber our intercolonial trade. Gradually that trade, will slip from us, aud we shall have none then, to aid m supporting these self-imposed burdens, which will devolve altogether on ourselves."
