Before his death the Waterloo veteran, Dougald McFarlan, sat for his portrait, which is now. finished and will be exhibited at the Ari Society's evening exhibition. The criminal statistics for 1882 show that durina that period 2990 offences were reported to the police against 2008 m 1681, 2714 pora-m-i were arrrsied as against 1927 m 1881. A heavy thunderstorm occurred at Weka Pass, near Waifcari, this evening. T- a.qnse streams of water flowed down each gully, and the railway train bad to proceed very cautiously. The ram was confined to a small portion of the district, and as most of the crops are m stook at the particular spot, ib is hoped that the damage will be small. Dunedin, Jan. 27. Patrick Walsh, proprietor of the H lensbrook flourtnill, near Tokomairiro met. with an alarming accident to-day. He was caught by a shaft and dragged up, but he managed to hold on to something till relieved. He had every stitch of clothing- torn off, and is much Btrained and bruised. The residence of' Mr Butherford, ] M.H. fct. near Kaitangata, was burned down last Wednesday. It was insured, it is stated, for only £50. At the Supreme Court to-day, a case against John Bewley, for indecent assault on a girl eight years old, was dismissed. G-reymouth. Jan. 27. The Burns Anniversary banquet was, according to custom, held here last night. Betwean forty and fifty persons were present. Auckland, Jan. 27. Dr. McKellar, late Surgeon-General of India, has been appointed surgeon to the Auckland Hospital.
