The St Kilda Casualty.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. The recent mishap to the 8.8. St Kilda, while off Woodpecker Bay, on the West Coast, was more serious than,. 3 at first imagined. The Westport Times reports that the mate, m whose charge ' the steamer was at the time, felt convinced from the presence of smoke and a sense of something burning, that everything was not going on as well as it should be., He went to the engineer m chfer>e of the engine-room and cold him of his suspicions, but 'that- officer thought that nothing was going wrong. The mate however did not teal satisfied, and reported the matter to ; the master of the oressel, . and the phief ;engin<ser then went down and immediately ordered the; fires to be drawn. The order, however, was given too late, as before the ccnimand could be t carried out the boiler burst, the crown being blown down, smashing the tubes, and pntting out thf> fires. Fortunately no persons was injured. Some little excite* ment arose on board, and on the master determining to send a boat oil shore, with instructions to effect a landing at Brighton or Charleston to request asßis>» tance from Greynibuth, the passengers -« wished to go ashore m it, but their y wish was, we think, very wisely refused, the risk being too great. The boat effected a landing is Woodpecker Bay. The mate obtained a horse and went to Charleston and telegraphed for the tug Dispatch to be sent to the assistance of the disabled St : Kilia.
